The hoplite was a disciplined soldier and formed walls with their shields pushing out with the spear to dismantle an oncoming opposition. This was a proven during the invasion of Greece by the Persians under Xerxes. The Greeks were able to fend off an army of over two-hundred thousand with an army of only three-hundred Spartans, seven-hundred thespians, and five thousand other Greek allies. Sculpture began as a very simplistic method of showing the comprehension of the human and it's beauty. In Neanderthals days sculptures of humans were drawn into cave walls, in Greek times the human was depicted in its perfect natural form. Before the cultural advancement of the Olympics art of people was based off of a figure standing in an unnatural position straight up and down with no variation. The features were very dull and humans looked much like a cylinder with a face etched into it. Now that the Greeks had the opportunity if seeing the naked human body in action artists can carve out a more three dimensional human with features that resemble the perfect human more. Statues of gods and goddesses were created as well as famous figures. The statues have lifelike features and are perfect replicas of human bodies. They are carved of marble and sometimes can be made of ivory and gold in the case of Athena's statue inside the Parthenon. This representation of humans left in the statues of ancient Greeks shows that the society had a understanding if the science in a human body, as well as the technology to do it. The statues would be on display so we can also assume that the Greeks wanted to see these representations of others, showing their culture in society as being sophisticated.
